Many owners are less careful than they should be about the underbody, and it suffers a range of damage. Outside objects are the main cause. So what are the underbody killers, and what should you watch for?
1. Speed bumps
Speed bumps are everywhere, but they vary in shape and height. Do not race over them: a tall bump strikes the underbody and scrapes it. The front bumper lip and the exhaust are the parts most often damaged.

2. Potholes and broken edges
Hit at speed, they can bend the underbody, damage the sump or knock the suspension out of alignment. Slow down and steer around them where it is safe.

3. Kerbs and steep ramps
Approach driveways and ramps at an angle so the car does not ground on the centre.

4. Stones and debris
Gravel thrown up chips the underbody coating, and once the film is broken rust starts and spreads.
