The Weakest Part of a Car: Protecting the Underbody

The underbody is where the car’s important systems converge, and it is fair to call it one of the most vulnerable areas. If a car rusts, it rusts from the bottom up, so protecting the underbody matters to most owners.

The main form of underbody protection today is an underbody coating, a term many newer drivers have not met. So what does it do, and why choose it?

Benefits:

1. In winter it stops cabin heat escaping downward through the floor, improving energy use.

2. Body vibration can resonate with the floor at certain frequencies, which is uncomfortable; the coating greatly damps that resonance.

3. Rust starts at the floor pan. With a coating, even acid rain, de-icing salt and alkaline wash water cannot get through the protective film.

4. It reduces friction noise while driving and improves sound insulation in the cabin.

5. Stones thrown up in motion chip the underbody paint, and once the film is broken rust starts at the chip and spreads into the steel. A coating prevents that damage.

Applying a coating involves five steps:

Step one: raise the vehicle on a lift and wash the underbody, clearing mud and grime completely.

Step two: mask the exhaust, brake lines and moving parts, and let the surface dry fully.

Step three: shake the product well and spray evenly from 30 to 40 cm with a professional gun, in several thin coats.

Step four: allow 15 to 20 minutes between coats, or until dry.

Step five: leave the vehicle to cure for 24 hours and avoid rough roads in that time.
