Fuel consumption rising is a common complaint. Before blaming the engine, work through the simple causes.

1. Check the tyres
Under-inflation is the most common cause: the car pushes a larger contact patch along. Check pressures monthly and before long journeys.

2. Check the air filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow and enriches the mixture. Replace it on schedule.
3. Check the brakes
A dragging caliper or a handbrake not fully released adds constant drag.

4. Check the oxygen sensor
An ageing sensor misreports the mixture and the engine runs rich.
5. Check your driving
Short trips, hard acceleration and long idling all cost fuel.
