Glass Coating in Five Minutes

Glass coating products have appeared across the detailing market. What are they, and what do they do? Plenty of owners still do not know. Here is the short version.

Question 1: what is it?

A glass coating uses a chemical process to lay a hydrophobic layer only a few nanometres thick on the glass. That layer is extremely slippery to water, so rain cannot form the irregular film that blurs vision, and dust, oil and bug residue on the surface clean off far more easily.

Question 2: what does it achieve in the rain?

Fast water shedding matters for visibility and safety. What does a coated windscreen actually do?

(1) At speed, the airflow lifts raindrops off the glass so they roll up and away instead of clinging. Vision stays clear under wind pressure even if the wipers struggle, giving strong water repellency and safer driving in rain.

(2) It lowers surface tension, so dust and grime find it harder to stick: the glass is easier to clean and the wipers wear less.
