A Beginner's Guide to Fuel Additives

Over the past few years the term "fuel additive" has become familiar. Attendants sometimes pitch one at the pump, and plenty of drivers are unsure how it is used, or what it is even for. Here is a short primer on the basics.

What is a fuel additive?
Fuel additives divide into gasoline additives and diesel additives. Because diesel passenger cars are a small share of the fleet in China, and diesel additives work on essentially the same active ingredients and principles as gasoline ones, this article does not cover them separately.

What does a fuel additive do?
Domestic fuel quality varies, and fuel additives exist to make up the shortfall. Some contain amine compounds that remove carbon deposits that build up in the engine over time; used regularly in small doses they greatly reduce deposit formation and the running problems deposits cause. Others improve the octane rating of the fuel to a degree, reducing or eliminating knock caused by insufficient octane.
