Most owners have met this: as the years pass the car pulls less and less, until it feels like dragging a cart, and eventually it is scrapped. So what actually causes the loss of power?

1. Oil sludge and carbon deposits
In most cases the main cause is sludge and carbon. They come from poor fuel quality and from the deposits the engine inevitably produces in service. Without regular cleaning they accumulate, clogging the oil galleries and the injectors, which leads to poor atomisation, higher fuel consumption and lower power. Clearing them promptly matters.

2. Excessive idling
Long periods idling in place encourage oil seal and gasket leaks and produce a large amount of carbon. Run that way for long and power falls, and engine life is shortened.

3. Intake system faults
The engine makes power from a fuel and air mixture. If the intake system is faulty, for instance blocked, the air volume drops and power falls sharply. Check for this.

4. Neglected maintenance
If the engine is neglected, the internal oil galleries become restricted. Wear becomes severe, and the familiar symptoms follow: shaking, higher fuel consumption and falling power. Regular engine care is essential.

Watch these four points and clean and care for the engine in good time, and the engine will keep its power.
