Cars, like people, develop complaints with age. Some need a workshop, but many need nothing at all: a small correction and they are fixed, at no cost.

1. The electronic parking brake will not release
For safety, the automatic release has conditions: the doors must be shut, the driver's seat belt fastened, and a forward or reverse gear selected. Meet all of them and the brake releases.

2. The engine will not start
After refuelling, the engine will not start. Does it need a tow? Not at all: the car will not start with the transmission in D. Some cars start if you press the brake. Move the selector to N or P and it starts normally.

3. The cooling fan keeps running after you stop
This is normal. On many cars, if the coolant is too hot the radiator fan keeps running after the engine is switched off and the car locked, cooling the system until the temperature is back in range, then stopping by itself.

4. Ticking from the exhaust
Ticking from the exhaust after you park is the metal contracting as it cools, not a fault.
