Eight Rules for Driving in Smog

Heavy smog covers much of the country at times. Driving in it needs care.

1. Slow down and increase the following distance.

2. Use fog lights and low beam, not high beam: high beam reflects off the particles and makes things worse.

3. Keep the windscreen and lights clean.

4. Use the air-conditioning on recirculate to keep polluted air out.

5. Change the cabin filter regularly.

6. Avoid sudden lane changes and overtaking.

7. Listen as well as look: sound carries further than sight in smog.

8. If visibility drops badly, pull off the road safely and wait.
