Some owners choose diesel for its fuel economy, but a diesel car differs a lot from a petrol one. What should diesel owners watch when servicing?

1. Buy good-quality diesel
Diesel is a complex hydrocarbon mixture. It is relatively safe as a fuel but harder to ignite, so quality directly affects how the engine runs. Diesel carrying water or contaminants badly damages the high-pressure distribution pump and clogs the fuel path, leading to engine faults. Buy from a reputable filling station.

2. Look after the fuel filter
The diesel filter is critical. A clogged filter costs power, shortens the life of the fuel system and wastes fuel; in bad cases it damages the engine. Cleaning and replacing it on schedule matters.

3. Clear carbon regularly
Diesel engines build up carbon just as petrol ones do. Left in place, it raises fuel consumption, cuts power, causes vibration and makes starting difficult.

Regular carbon removal is important. Many engine-cleaning products on the market are aimed at petrol engines, so choose one specified for diesel.
