Dealer Service Upgrades You Do Not Need

Cars age without servicing, and parts fail. Servicing is essential. Most owners go to the dealer, but dealers upsell: impressive-sounding jobs you could do yourself, or that are not urgent, get recommended anyway. How do you tell them apart?

1. Engine bay cleaning

High-street detailers rarely offer it; dealer service lists do. Owners imagine a careful wipe-down, but in practice it is a high-pressure jet for 200 to 300 yuan. Detailers avoid it because a jet into the bay can cause short circuits: if they damage the car they must pay. Dealers know their own product and can fix problems quickly, but unless something specific needs cleaning, wipe it down yourself.

2. Interior sanitising

Cars develop odours, and the offer sounds professional. In practice it is a fumigant can released inside with the air on recirculate, for 200 to 300 yuan. Buy the can and do it yourself.

3. Flushes and additives

Engine flush, fuel system flush, transmission flush: often recommended well before the schedule. Follow the handbook intervals unless there is a symptom.
