Dashboards carry a bewildering array of warning lights. It is worth knowing them, because they report the car’s condition directly. Some mean a real fault, some are false alarms. These ones mean pull over.

1. Engine fault light
This shows the engine’s operating state, usually in amber. It lights during the self-test when you turn the key and goes out once the engine starts. If it stays on after starting, the engine management system has logged a fault and needs checking.

2. ABS warning light
It lights briefly at start-up. If it is still on after driving for a while, the ABS has a fault. ABS is part of the braking system and affects safety, so have it checked promptly.

3. Oil pressure light
A brief flash at start-up is normal. If it stays lit while driving, the oil level or pressure is below specification and continuing will cause wear.

4. Battery warning light
It means the charging system is not working: the alternator or belt. The car is running on battery alone and will stop when it is flat.
