Common Car Faults Any Owner Can Diagnose

Older cars develop the occasional fault. A little knowledge helps you find the problem and deal with it quickly. Even a novice can handle these minor issues.

1. The coolant temperature warning light

Pull over as soon as you safely can and find the cause. Do not keep driving, or you risk warping the head. The light is a symptom. First possibility: the fan has stopped, mechanical or electric. Open the bonnet and check whether the fan is jammed or its plug has come loose; fix that and you are done. Second: feel the lower hose. If it is cool, the thermostat or water pump has failed and coolant is not circulating. A temperature warning is serious: if you cannot resolve it, stop, open the bonnet to help cooling, call for recovery, and do not try to restart the engine.

2. The coolant level warning light

A level warning is more serious than a temperature warning. A temperature warning means the coolant is too hot to cool effectively; a level warning means coolant is missing, which is a question of whether cooling is possible at all.

Check for leaks at hoses, the radiator and the water pump, top up only when the engine is cool, and have the leak found promptly.
