Most drivers have seen the news about cloned plates. It is a nuisance: if the cloned vehicle commits an offence, the record may land on your car. So what should you do?

1. Collect evidence
If you spot the cloned vehicle, photograph its appearance and note the details. Keep parking receipts and anything else that supports your case.

2. Report it
Report to the traffic police where the vehicle is registered or where the offence occurred. Once the report is accepted they will investigate, and you should cooperate with that investigation.

3. Present your documents
If the offence happened elsewhere, take your licence, vehicle registration certificate, insurance policy and the rest of the paperwork to the traffic police in the place where the offence occurred. They will verify that your vehicle has been cloned.

4. Change the plate at the vehicle office
Once the local traffic police have confirmed the cloning, they issue a written statement. Take it to the vehicle office and change the plate number, cancelling the old one. After that, further offences by the cloned vehicle will not be recorded against you.
