Washing Mistakes That Damage Paint

Washing is the most common form of car care. To save money and time many owners wash at home, but done wrongly it damages the paint without the owner noticing. Here is what to avoid.

1. Washing in direct sun

In strong summer sun a wet surface dries fast, which is why some owners wash in the open. It is a mistake: droplets act as lenses and create local hot spots in the top layer of paint. Wash that way repeatedly and the finish loses its gloss and goes dull. Wax applied in those conditions also goes on unevenly. Wash and wax in shade, but not under a tree, where sap and droppings fall on the wet car. A garage or carport is ideal; failing that, an overcast day or early morning or evening.

2. Washing with laundry powder

Some owners reach for whatever detergent is to hand. Laundry powder is alkaline and very damaging: used repeatedly the gloss goes, and the corrosion is invisible in the short term. Dishwashing liquid is alkaline too, so avoid that as well.

3. Using a dirty sponge

Grit held in the sponge is dragged across the paint. Rinse the sponge often, or use a mitt with a grit guard.
