Driving Habits That Quietly Destroy Your Car

Once you have a new car, good habits matter. A few careless behaviours will damage it quickly. Which ones should you avoid?

1. Flying over kerbs and speed bumps

Roads vary, and kerbs and uneven surfaces are everywhere. Many drivers like to keep their speed up and do not slow for them, but taking them fast is hard on the dampers and springs.

2. Flashing the lights constantly

Some drivers vent frustration by flashing the lights. Every flash loads the combination switch: at the instant of contact the current can be much higher, and the resulting arc erodes the lamp contacts.

3. Riding the clutch

Holding the car in a half-engaged clutch state keeps the clutch partly in contact, so engine and gearbox are not properly connected, the input and output shafts run at different speeds, and the clutch wears faster. Do not drive for long with the clutch half engaged.

4. Resting a hand on the gear lever

Weight on the lever keeps the selector fork loaded against the synchro, causing wear over time.
